Michael Hill found the reference in the Drake’s vintage archive: 1970s track-and-field gear that had lived on sidelines and in gym bags and earned its character in the process. The result is a rugby shirt that does what those pieces did — sits at the intersection of sport and everyday dressing without claiming to be either. Cut from heavy yarn-dyed cotton jersey in an ecru, navy and yellow stripe, with a chunky quarter-zip and ribbed hem and cuffs.

The stripe reads differently to a block stripe — more rhythm, less statement. The ecru ground keeps the palette from feeling heavy; the navy and yellow lift it without pushing it into novelty.

Product Details

Drake’s was founded in London in 1977. Under the creative direction of Michael Hill, it has grown from a neckwear specialist into one of the most considered British menswear houses working today — a maker with genuine manufacturing depth and an unhurried focus on quality over novelty. The quarter-zip rugby shirt is one of its most characteristic pieces.

The quarter-zip has a specific origin. When Michael Hill was working through the Drake’s vintage archive, he found a collection of 1970s track-and-field gear — the kind of sportswear that had lived on sidelines and in gym bags and earned its character over years of use. The rugby shirt followed from that discovery: not as a pastiche of the era, but as an honest attempt to build something with the same qualities.

This version is cut from heavy yarn-dyed cotton jersey. Yarn dyeing means the colour is in the fibre before weaving — the ecru, navy and yellow stripe has the depth that surface printing cannot replicate. The cloth carries the weight and hand of vintage sportswear. At distance the stripe reads as measured; closer in, where the yarns sit in the cloth, it has more character.

Construction follows the archive reference directly: a chunky quarter-zip at the neck — the detail that placed this shirt in the 1970s tradition Michael Hill was drawing from. Ribbed hem and cuffs. The fit is relaxed without being shapeless. Made in Portugal.

Wear over an Oxford cloth button-down — the ecru ground keeps the palette clean and the quarter-zip allows for temperature regulation as you move between indoors and out. Works equally on its own with selvedge denim or cream chinos. Canvas trainers suit the archive sportswear register; loafers move it somewhere slightly smarter without asking too much of the garment.

A field jacket or waxed cotton over the top extends it comfortably into colder weather. Heavy knitwear underneath on the coldest days — the relaxed cut accommodates a layer without the bulk showing.
