Product Details

Drake’s was founded in London in 1977. Starting as a neckwear maker, it has grown into a house that manufactures as well as sells, with an unhurried approach to product that shows in every piece. The Madras Linen-Cotton Work Shirt is not a statement garment. It is a working one.

Madras cloth takes its name from Chennai, India, where cotton has been hand-spun and woven for centuries. Short-staple cotton yarns, spun by hand, create the characteristically slubby, uneven surface — a texture that comes from the process, not a design decision. The check is naturally dyed and will bleed and soften with washing. The red, orange and green will continue to mellow for as long as the shirt is worn.

Blending linen with the cotton adds a further dimension. Linen fades differently from cotton, the two fibres ageing at different rates and creating a surface that becomes more interesting rather than less over time.

The work shirt silhouette is built for ease: a spread collar, two chest pockets, and a slightly fuller, shorter cut that sits naturally untucked. Single-needle construction and mother-of-pearl buttons — the standard Drake’s approach, regardless of category.
